Office kitchens, like any other communal space in the office have to be efficiently managed in order to be kept in a great condition for all employees to enjoy. This can be more challenging at times, especially when it comes to appliances.

Among other things, office etiquette requires each employer to wipe down the microwave after use to prevent dirt building up. But how many do actually do it?

With the amount of uses they get, microwaves can get smelly and dirty regularly. Not only does it look unappealing to use but a dirty microwave can be a source of germs and bacteria in the office.

How can I clean my microwave effectively?

The idea is to create a steamy environment to loosen up and remove dried up food particles. Once the steam has attacked the dirt, then all you have to do is to wipe it down with a sponge or a cloth.

There are 2 effective and eco-friendly ways to clean stubborn food stains from your microwave. Both options are ideal to clean, disinfect and odorize your work appliance!

The first method includes the use of vinegar. Because we are talking about an office environment, you might find that people in your office can either be allergic or sensitive to vinegar. Which is why, a second option is available – using lemon juice.

How to clean your microwave with vinegar

For this method you will need:

  • Water
  • White vinegar
  • Microwave safe jug or bowl
  • Cloth or sponge

Step 1:
Mix one cup of water with one cup of vinegar in a microwave safe jug or bowl.

Step 2:
Place it in the microwave and turn it on. Depending on how powerful it is, set it between 5 and 10 minutes.

Step 3:
Carefully remove the jug from the microwave once it’s done.

Step 4:
Take your cloth or sponge and clean inside the microwave. The steam has already loosen up the dirt so it should all come off easily and without having to scrub.

Step 5:
Don’t forget the outside. Using 1:1 water / vinegar mixture or an antibacterial spray, clean the outside of the microwave. Don’t forget the door and door handle.

Step 1:
Mix the water with the lemon. If you’re using lemon essential oil, use a few drops. If you’re using lemon juice – add 2 teaspoons.

Step 2:
Spray the mixture inside the microwave thoroughly. Don’t forget the top, dirt is always worse on the top.

Step 3:
Pour the rest of the mixture on the sponge. Make sure the sponge is fully saturated and place it on the rotative table inside the microwave.

Step 4:
Turn on the microwave for 2 minutes.

Step 5:
Once the timer has gone off, leave the sponge in the microwave (with the door closed) for a few minutes.

Then open the door and use the sponge to wipe down the inside. The food residue and stubborn stains are now melting away and your microwave is back to being shiny and clean.

Repeat the last step from the Vinegar solution and wipe down the outside of the microwave with an antibacterial spray.
