New Survey Reveals Office Staff’s Germ Fears

A new survey has revealed that nearly three-quarters of office staff harbour concerns about the level of germs in their workplace.

Conducted by Cogent Research on behalf of cleaning supply company Kimberly-Clark Professional, 3-3 office workers from all across the UK were asked about how much the cleanliness of their office was a concern for them, with a particular focus on germs.

Of those three hundred, 21% said they were 'greatly concerned' by germs at work, with 51% stating they were 'somewhat concerned'. A more universal concern was the worry about the transfer of germs from work to home, with 57% of those surveyed saying it was something they believed was an issue.

Suzanne Halley, end-user marketing manager – UK at Kimberly-Clark Professional, said: "Office workers are right to be concerned about hygiene at work all year round. Invisible bacteria in the workplace can cause colds, flu and upset stomachs. Though they are minor, these are unpleasant illnesses that force people to take time off, and staff absence costs UK businesses nearly £30 billion annually. However, simple steps such as installing sanitisers around an office, and making sanitising wipes widely available, can make a big difference to wellbeing."

She continued: "A healthy workforce is a happy and productive workforce. Particularly at this time of year, in the middle of the cold and flu season companies that take pro-active measures to keep their staff free of illness will be rewarded in the longer term. Indeed, 61% of those questioned in our survey said they’d like hand sanitisers to be more readily available around the workplace."

But according to a report from the University of Houston, we might well do well to add a bottle of disinfectant into your travel essentials whilst we're taking a break. [caption id="attachment_476" align="aligncenter" width="470"]Hotel Room Cleaning Study[/caption] After diligently swabbing hotel rooms in Indiana, Texas and South Carolina, researchers have labelled the Television Remote and Bedside lamp topped the list of items in a hotel room most likely to be contaminated by bacteria. It seems that these two hotel room staples are most-commonly glossed over by cleaning staff, who might only give them a light dusting or polish. However, it would seem that many guests are handling the remote or lamp directly after using the bathroom - spreading bacteria. Speaking of bathrooms, as expected, the toilet and bathroom sink were also high on the list, posting exceptionally high levels of coliform bacteria on their surfaces. By contrast, the headboard of hotel beds and the bathroom door handle were found to be the cleanest place in most rooms. Katie Kirsch, an undergraduate who this week presented the results to the general meeting of the American Society for Microbiology, also said that hotel cleaning staffs' mops and sponges were one of the main culprits behind the transference between surfaces, with Ms Kirsch also having the potential to cross-contaminate surfaces between rooms, too. The conclusion of the study praised most hoteliers for their high levels of surface sanitation; but warned of the inconsistency between hotels. You might be surprised to learn that there is no universal cleaning 'code' for hotels - instead leaving it up to the best judgement of the cleaning staff, as well as spot-checks by managers and mystery customers. Most researchers involved with the study suggested implementing the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) to the hotel-room cleaning process. HACCP is a NASA-developed system of cleaning and disinfection; designed to ensure the safety of food for astronauts - though it has been adopted by a number of industries. Superbug Cleaning Company Gets Grant

Superbug killing products company Germ Warfare has moved to the Isle of Man recently after being offered extensive grants. Germ founder Paul Ward, who impressed James Caan on Dragon’s Den so much that he offered to invest, will see up to 40% of his capital investment, property and marketing expenses paid for this year. Treating too Many Patients Leaves Hospitals Unclean

According to a new report from the British Medical Association, pressure to treat too many patients too quickly leaves little time for proper hospital cleaning. The conservative party has attacked health secretary Nicola Sturgeon, over plans to ban NHS bosses from putting more hospital cleaning services out to contract. She added: ‘A letter will issue from my department to all health boards advising them that from now on there will be no further privatisation of hospital cleaning and catering services anywhere in Scotland.’
