New Survey Reveals Office Staff’s Germ Fears

In Cleaning News, commercial cleaning, Contract Cleaning, News, Office Cleaning by alan0 Comments

A new survey has revealed that nearly three-quarters of office staff harbour concerns about the level of germs in their workplace.

Conducted by Cogent Research on behalf of cleaning supply company Kimberly-Clark Professional, 3-3 office workers from all across the UK were asked about how much the cleanliness of their office was a concern for them, with a particular focus on germs.

Of those three hundred, 21% said they were 'greatly concerned' by germs at work, with 51% stating they were 'somewhat concerned'. A more universal concern was the worry about the transfer of germs from work to home, with 57% of those surveyed saying it was something they believed was an issue.

Suzanne Halley, end-user marketing manager – UK at Kimberly-Clark Professional, said: "Office workers are right to be concerned about hygiene at work all year round. Invisible bacteria in the workplace can cause colds, flu and upset stomachs. Though they are minor, these are unpleasant illnesses that force people to take time off, and staff absence costs UK businesses nearly £30 billion annually. However, simple steps such as installing sanitisers around an office, and making sanitising wipes widely available, can make a big difference to wellbeing."

She continued: "A healthy workforce is a happy and productive workforce. Particularly at this time of year, in the middle of the cold and flu season companies that take pro-active measures to keep their staff free of illness will be rewarded in the longer term. Indeed, 61% of those questioned in our survey said they’d like hand sanitisers to be more readily available around the workplace."

The use of hand sanitiser is becoming increasingly more prevalent in the city that Total Clean operates within. More and more often, office workers are taking matters in to their own hands - literally - bringing pocket-sized hand sanitiser dispensers to work with them.

As a retailer in janitorial supplies, we’ve also seen an increase in businesses buying small batches of basic supplies such as detergent, sanitiser, disinfectant and disposable cloths to store in key areas of the office - particularly conference rooms, where guests are entertained and food is often consumed.

How Clean is Your Hotel Room?

In commercial cleaning, Contract Cleaning, News by admin0 Comments

When we stay in a hotel room, the last thing we want to think about is it's cleanliness. But according to a report from the University of Houston, we might well do well to add a bottle of disinfectant into your travel essentials whilst we're taking a break. [caption id="attachment_476" align="aligncenter" width="470"]Hotel Room Cleaning Study[/caption] After diligently swabbing hotel rooms in Indiana, Texas and South Carolina, researchers have labelled the Television Remote and Bedside lamp topped the list of items in a hotel room most likely to be contaminated by bacteria. It seems that these two hotel room staples are most-commonly glossed over by cleaning staff, who might only give them a light dusting or polish. However, it would seem that many guests are handling the remote or lamp directly after using the bathroom - spreading bacteria. Speaking of bathrooms, as expected, the toilet and bathroom sink were also high on the list, posting exceptionally high levels of coliform bacteria on their surfaces. By contrast, the headboard of hotel beds and the bathroom door handle were found to be the cleanest place in most rooms. Katie Kirsch, an undergraduate who this week presented the results to the general meeting of the American Society for Microbiology, also said that hotel cleaning staffs' mops and sponges were one of the main culprits behind the transference between surfaces, with Ms Kirsch also having the potential to cross-contaminate surfaces between rooms, too. The conclusion of the study praised most hoteliers for their high levels of surface sanitation; but warned of the inconsistency between hotels. You might be surprised to learn that there is no universal cleaning 'code' for hotels - instead leaving it up to the best judgement of the cleaning staff, as well as spot-checks by managers and mystery customers. Most researchers involved with the study suggested implementing the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) to the hotel-room cleaning process. HACCP is a NASA-developed system of cleaning and disinfection; designed to ensure the safety of food for astronauts - though it has been adopted by a number of industries. Here at Total Clean, we don't think contract cleaning needs to be rocket science - in the age of internet reviews and social sharing, a hotel with a bad reputation for poor cleanliness is soon outed. The study is unlikely to become a landmark, however, as Ms Kirsch and her team of researchers feel a larger sample size would benefit the outcome of the study, as only three hotel rooms were tested in each state. That said, if you feel compelled to give the TV Remote a once-over with a wet wipe next time you're on holiday, we wouldn't blame you...

Hiring an efficient Office Cleaning Company

In Contract Cleaning, Office Cleaning by admin0 Comments

There are hundreds of them out there and I risk saying that the cleaning industry is saturated with too many office cleaning companies, especially here in London. Such saturation is lowering the quality of the cleaning services offered and it is becoming ever so hard to find an efficient office cleaning company. In this article I'll give you some tips on how to hire an efficient office cleaning company that will not only get the job done but that does it respecting the cleaning industry regulations as well as its employees. A highly efficient office cleaning service is all about good costumer service, training and flexibility. Look for companies that provide detailed information on how their workforce is trained and what qualification they have, are they professional cleaners or just party time workers, be very careful here many of these so "professional cleaning companies" employ illegal immigrants which you know is serious infringement of the law here in the UK and EU countries. Flexibility and customer service are closely related. When I refer to flexibility I mean the flexibility to work outside office hours so it doesn't get in the way of day to day activities in your office. A reliable customer service doesn't necessary need to be a 24hr helpline but a service that is always there when you need it to clarify services provided as well as invoicing and other questions that might arise regarding their cleaning jobs. Health and Safety Ask for the companies health and safety policy, if they don't have one the is a huge signal that they are not as professional as they say they are. An office cleaning health and safety policy should cover all the necessary and practical steps of its employees and people affected by its activities by providing training, safety devices and protective clothing when necessary. Quality Control It is extremely important that the chosen office cleaning company offers a quality control plan that is specially designed to meet your requirements and your premises specifications. Staff briefing should be as detailed as possible and work schedule prepared according to each area and clearly displayed. In some cases a checklist is also a good alternative to ensure that work is carried out according to your requirements. Don't forget to ask about their random checks policy normally carried out by a cleaning supervisor; in many cases this is included in the company's Health and Safety Policy. Environmental Concern Environmental concern is the hot topic these days. Companies that don't have an Environmental Concern Policy are being left out and this is not different in the cleaning industry. I'm sure your company has one so why not hire a service provider that also cares for our planet as much as you do. Simple details can go a long away; ask if they work with eco-friendly cleaning products, what is their approach to minimising waste and the consumption of resources (materials, fuel and energy). These simple questions can make difference for the environment in the long run. You know what they say, every little helps. Commercial Cleaning Accreditations To sum things up the office cleaning company should have at least one of two accreditations or memberships that will ensure that their services adhere to strict codes of practice and are subject to external audits to check compliance. Some good examples are the ISO 9001 Accreditation and The British Institute of Cleaning Science membership.

office cleaners

There are more than just office cleaners; there are also cleaners for pubs, shops, restaurants, warehouses, and other commercial businesses. These dedicated companies provide daily cleaning programmes, as well as those that are less frequent. The advertisements noted that you could opt in for carpet dusting, window cleaning, upholstery cleaning, or speciality options. Many of the companies offer hard to reach options for both indoor and outdoor needs. The best part about the process and the professionally tailored service is their dedication to offer an affordable solution that is both professional and efficient. One such commercial cleaning company has made it their mission to offer the best employees they can staff. Their staff is not only skilled in cleaning, but they have also had the proper training in safety and health. Superbug Cleaning Company Gets Grant

In Cleaning News, Contract Cleaning, Hospital Cleaning by admin0 Comments

Superbug killing products company Germ Warfare has moved to the Isle of Man recently after being offered extensive grants. Germ founder Paul Ward, who impressed James Caan on Dragon’s Den so much that he offered to invest, will see up to 40% of his capital investment, property and marketing expenses paid for this year. He said: "The Isle of Man (government) are also fantastic. It's 100% the grants from them to help us set up. Research and development and marketing; everything a small business would need they have offered to us." Germ Warfare is setting up its sales operations on the island and plans to relocate its new product development and its manufacturing. Germ has developed a range of cleaning products that kill harmful bacteria including c.difficile spore, MRSA, swine flu at hand temperature and without the use of chemicals that can cause irritation to the skin. Launched in January 2008 the company sold £500,000 worth of cleaning agents into doctor surgeries, large employers like Royal Bank of Scotland, and online shoppers. This is a positive direction for the killing of superbugs and what we think is a worthy investment for the Isle of Man. Cleaning Industry Sweeps Up During Recession

In Cleaning News, Contract Cleaning, Hospital Cleaning, Office Cleaning, Total Clean Services by admin0 Comments

The cleaning industry is one of the few areas bucking the recession with around 45,000 jobs available at any one time. In fact the number is more likely to be 60,000 when including part time domestic jobs. Andrew Large of the Cleaning and Support Services Association explains: "The cleaning industry has an advantage when there's an economic downturn - after all - it is essential.” No matter what happens you still need clean hospitals, schools and offices.” He continues: "With the presence of swine flu too, the importance of hygiene is becoming more and more apparent. The cleaning industry employs at least one million people, meaning the number of vacancies is naturally high as people come and go.” Mr Large adds: "I know one man who started out as a carpet cleaner in his teens and now has a £50million business. If you're prepared to work hard there are plenty of opportunities." It's also a good industry if you want a stable job or career. But if you yourself are looking for a fantastic contract cleaning company then Total Clean offer bespoke cleaning services. For more information please visit our website.

Treating too Many Patients Leaves Hospitals Unclean

In Cleaning News, Contract Cleaning, Hospital Cleaning, News by admin0 Comments

According to a new report from the British Medical Association, pressure to treat too many patients too quickly leaves little time for proper hospital cleaning. The BMA also said hospitals should face sanctions if they fail to implement simple strategies like washing hands with soap and water or using alcohol rubs. Dr Vivienne Nathanson said measures like deep cleaning and bare 'below the elbows' needed to be part of the long-term measures and regular, thorough cleaning of hospitals. She said: 'Deep cleaning is a good thing provided you go in and do all the other organisational things and keep your cleaning at a high level.' This includes proper cleaning of things like the buttons on machines and switches, she added: 'We are not dismissing deep clean but it does not work on its own.' The report also said that the areas of a hospital that posed the greatest risk to patients were not always included in cleaning contracts. Health Secretary Attacked Over Contract Cleaning Plans

In Cleaning News, Contract Cleaning, News, Total Clean Services by alan0 Comments

The conservative party has attacked health secretary Nicola Sturgeon, over plans to ban NHS bosses from putting more hospital cleaning services out to contract. The Tory MSP said: ‘It was disingenuous, misleading and wrong of the SNP health secretary Nicola Sturgeon to infer that external cleaning contracts were to blame for recent outbreaks of hospital acquired infections.’ ’She should concentrate on practical measures which would make a difference and not waste time on misguided political ideology.’ Ms Sturgeon told the SNP annual conference in Perth that she is banning hospitals from contracting out anymore cleaning and catering services. She said she was setting 'very tough' new targets to cut rates of C difficile, and added that ‘the very highest standards of hospital cleanliness’ would be required to meet this. She added: ‘A letter will issue from my department to all health boards advising them that from now on there will be no further privatisation of hospital cleaning and catering services anywhere in Scotland.’
